If someone claims to be a lawyer in Ontario and they are not listed as one on the lso.ca directory they are not a real lawyer in Ontario.

It is illegal to say you are a lawyer when you are not.

It is also illegal to provide legal advice if you are not a lawyer. If any of these liars attended court and represented themselves as a lawyer when they were not they would likely be found in contempt of court and perhaps even jailed for their behaviour. Never rely on anyone for legal advice who you are not able to verify with the LSO.

It is illegal and disgusting to see people claiming to be real lawyers when they are not. They can just say whatever they want, make false promises, etc. and never be held accountable for it unless they themselves get charged or prosecuted for illegally practicing law. Sometimes they do get caught and held responsible for lying about their qualifications and face strict penalties.

Legitimate lawyers in Ontario, Canada are all publicly verifiable on lso.ca. That is the whole point of the website. Anyone who is claiming to be a lawyer or licenced paralegal in Ontario should be able to be looked up and found on the LSO directory. Paralegals are not allowed to represent those charged with DUI/impaired driving/over 80 though because such charges exceed the seriousness levels of their scope of permissible practice.

Someone in my community (Indian, Chinese, Muslim, Filipino, Iranian etc.) told me to trust them and let them take care of it.

Perhaps they are a friend, family member, or one of the only people you know in Canada and they are claiming to be a lawyer in Ontario. You should always look up their name on the LSO directory of lawyers and paralegals. Please note however that paralegals are not lawyers and are not allowed to represent people charged with DUI/impaired driving/over 80 offences in Ontario, Canada.
